I have just about decided to purchase a JD4200 Hydro, with R4 tires. Since most of my work will be cutting grass, I am a bit concerned with destroying my yard, when mowing in the spring. I'm not sure the weight of the tractor on wet ground won't be a problem. I feel the JD4100 is too light for other things I want to do. I guess I want the best of both worlds, and not have to buy two tractors. Has anyone found yard damage to be a problem when cutting in the spring?

Go with the R3 turf tires, the R4 cleats will compact your soil too much.
You may not see the compaction but if you walked over the area you would
definitely feel the cleat impressions under your feet. ....

I've got a Kubota 3010 with LOADED R-4's. It similar in size and weight to the 4200.
I don't experience any problem on my turf. In light of the other uses I have for the tractor, I was afraid that Turf tires would be flat in short order and would not offer adequate traction when needed.
Before I decided, I posted and heard from severasl other memebers of the forum who had no problem.
Where I am in southern Ontario, the soil has a lot of clay which makes for hard ground. (We have brick factories in the area.) Also, my turfed area is quite level.
If you will be mowing hills and very soft soil, I suspect that you may get some scuffing and compression.

I have a 4400 with R-3turfs. I have used this tractor for many things. The one that comes to mind that would ruin my turfs as most have said did nothing. I graded a old scrapyard, more than 100 years of shredded iron and steel scrap. When I took the job I built in a tire blowout price. I rototilled and then scarified the area(3+ acres). I churned up more crap and sharp items than I would be able to count. To make a long story short, no flats, no leaks, no cuts. I do not have a flat preventer in my tires or any special precautions. I also use my bucket for lifting pallets that are at the limit of the loader and no problems. I do mow a lot of finished lawns and would not dream of using R-4's. I had them for a while at the insistance of my dealer (with the agreement that if I did not like them he would take them back). They lasted less than a week, too many ruts. Have you ever seen R-4's on a tractor used for golf course maintenance? ....

I have a 4200 with turf tires, belly mower, and loader and have been very pleased with the turfs. I bought chains thinking I would need them for snow blading, but this was not the case, and I've never put them on. Traction was fine for 6 inch snows. If your into ice then I doubt the tread makes any difference anyway.
I've also not had any problems using the loader with them. Perhaps part of the reason is that mostly I use the loader in mid hystat range which limits the torque and prevents tire slippage. Since the loader is not a bulldozer, I try not to abuse it by excessive work in low range.
Yes, turfs will squat, but so what? If you're not exceeding the load rating and not running at high speed, I don't think it hurts anything.

This is a hard decision for me to make, and I'm probably making it harder than it should be. I have been looking for a tractor for over two years now, and I know exactly what I want / need, except for the tires. I really like the R4's, but the majority of people responding to this post, seem to indicate they would be a mistake. Anyway I'm leaving town for a few days, so I have untill Friday to make up my mind, before I place my order. I would like to thank everyone for their input on this subject. Thanks ....

I have turfs on one tractor and ags on the the other. My ground is fragile with a lot of sand and sharp rock. The turfs work much better for me and traction is decent in anything except snow and ice. I run chains all around in the winter - even on the tractor with the Ag tires. A side benefit is that the turfs give a much smoother ride.... but the real reason I got them is that I don't like to look at cleat marks in the dirt. ....

Michael, I've a 4100 with R1 ag tires. I chose the 4100 because of its light weight--having previously gotten heavier machines stuck in the mud. The ag tires leave a very clear impression in my farm soil--when the soil is wet. I won't even consider taking it across my lawn with these tires. I recommend asking your dealer, who hopefully knows your area and soil. Best of luck. JonB ....
